A Miami Cuban is a chain of interlocking links that lie flat in a single plane rather than twisting as they move. Worn on the neck it behaves less like a rope and more like a band, holding its face forward instead of rolling over. The links here are smooth, high-polished and domed, with a completely plain unset surface.

The lock is the exception. It is a box clasp shaped to the profile of the chain, and its whole face is pavé-set with small round cubic zirconia — rows of stones running right across the box and continuing along the fold-over safety latches on each side. A plain polished push-button sits at the centre, grooved for grip, so there is one piece of clean metal at the middle of all that texture.

That arrangement is the point of the piece. Turned to the back, the lock disappears and you are wearing a plain gold Cuban chain. Turned to the front, it becomes the feature — a single concentrated flash against an otherwise unbroken run of polished links.

Choosing a width and a length

It disperses light more strongly than diamond does, roughly 0.060 against diamond's 0.044, which is why a well-cut cubic zirconia throws bright flashes of colour. On a clasp this size that fire is concentrated into one small area, which is exactly what makes it read.

Stainless steel takes daily wear in its stride. It stays bright through showers, workouts and weather, and a soft cloth brings the polish straight back.
