What 20 mm actually looks like

Most Cuban chains sit between 8 and 12 mm. At 20 mm this one is roughly twice that, and the difference is not subtle: the links are wide enough to read individually from across a room, and the chain sits on the collarbone as a broad band rather than as a line. It is the widest piece in the range and it is meant to be seen.

The links are rounded and domed rather than sharply faceted, uniform in size from end to end, and each one is covered in tidy rows of small stones set flush into the metal. Because a Miami Cuban lies flat in a single plane, those faces stay pointed forward as the chain moves instead of rolling under, which is what keeps a piece this wide firing along its whole length.

The clasp and how it sits

The closure is a large rectangular box clasp, fully pavé across its face in the same pattern as the links, with a plain tongue and a hidden push-button release. A security latch sits inside the clasp as a second point of hold, which matters on a chain with this much weight behind it.

At 22 inches the chain sits at the top of the chest, which is where a piece of this width wants to be: high enough to be framed by an open collar, low enough that the links have room to lie flat. Worn with the clasp at the back it reads as an unbroken band; worn with the clasp forward it becomes a deliberate centrepiece.

Styling and when to wear it

A 20 mm iced chain is a single-piece statement. It does not layer and it does not want company at the neck. Give it a plain crew neck or an open collar and let the width do the work, and keep anything else you are wearing quieter than it is.

The bright white finish holds the same register as steel and white-gold, so a watch or a ring in a cool tone ties in naturally. About the stones

The stones are cubic zirconia, cut as round brilliants and selected for a colourless white grade rather than the grey cast of cheaper stone. Cubic zirconia scores 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, hard enough to hold a crisp polish through everyday wear.

It disperses light more strongly than diamond does, roughly 0.060 against diamond's 0.044, which is why a well-cut cubic zirconia throws bright flashes of colour that catch the eye from across a room. That fire is what makes an iced piece read from a distance.

Care

The plating gives a bright surface that resists tarnishing and keeps its shine with very little effort.

Store your jewellery dry and away from perfume and household cleaners, and a soft polishing cloth will bring the finish straight back. Slipping pieces off before you swim keeps them looking their best.
