Yes, rhodium plating wears off. It is a thin metal coating, not a permanent change to the piece underneath, and on a ring worn every day most people notice it thinning somewhere between six months and two years. It can be renewed by re-plating, so wear is not the end of the piece.
Rhodium is a rare, silvery-white metal from the platinum group, the same family as platinum and palladium. It is prized for jewellery because it is hard, bright and resists tarnish, but it is applied as a coating rather than a solid piece — nobody makes a ring out of solid rhodium because it is too brittle to work that way.
The coating goes on by electroplating. The piece is placed in a rhodium salt solution and a current is passed through it, which draws rhodium atoms out of the solution and bonds them to the surface of the metal underneath, typically 925 sterling silver or gold. Our tennis bracelet, for instance, carries five passes through that process rather than one, building up more rhodium before the piece ever reaches a wrist.
Why does rhodium plating wear off at all?
Because the layer is thin by design. Jewellery-grade rhodium plating runs about 0.75 to 1 micron thick as a rule, with a wider working range of roughly 0.1 to 2 microns depending on how much contact a piece expects. A micron is a thousandth of a millimetre, so even the thicker end of that range is a film, not a shell.
That thinness is not a shortcut. Rhodium is a brittle metal, and a layer applied too thick is more likely to crack and flake than a thin one. The standard thickness is a compromise: enough rhodium to give a bright white finish and real scratch resistance, not so much that the coating fails on its own.
Every micron of that layer sits on the outside of the piece, which means every micron is exposed to whatever the piece touches. Rings meet the most: door handles, keyboards, soap, fabric, dozens of times a day. Earrings and pendants mostly meet air and hair, so they keep their plating far longer.
How long does rhodium plating actually last?
It depends heavily on what kind of piece it is and how it is worn, and different sources give somewhat different numbers because the honest answer is a range rather than a fixed figure.
For a ring worn daily, the commonly cited window is roughly six months to two years before thinning becomes visible. A tennis bracelet or cuban link sits closer to the ring end of that range, since a bracelet moves against the wrist, a desk and a sleeve all day. Earrings, pendants and necklaces that see less friction and less hand contact typically go several years, sometimes five or more, before the same wear shows.
Wear does not arrive as a sudden change. It is gradual: the bright, mirror-white finish softens first, then thins further until whatever is underneath — the sterling silver, or the yellow gold on a piece like our cross pendant in its gold-plated option — starts to show through at the points that get the most contact, usually the underside of a ring shank or the high points of a bracelet link.

What makes rhodium plating wear off faster?
Three things drive it: friction, chemical exposure and individual skin chemistry.
Friction is mechanical, plain contact and rubbing against other surfaces, and it is the biggest factor for rings and bracelets specifically because those pieces are in constant motion against skin, fabric and objects. Chemical exposure comes from chlorine in pools, salt water, perfume, lotion, and household cleaning products, all of which can attack the plating faster than daily wear alone. Skin chemistry is the least predictable: the acidity of individual sweat varies from person to person, and more acidic skin tends to strip plating faster, which is why two people can wear what looks like the same ring and see very different results.
None of this is unique to our pieces. It is true of any rhodium-plated jewellery from any workshop, because it is a property of the metal, not a manufacturing defect.
Can rhodium plating be redone once it wears?
Yes. Re-plating is a routine service, not a repair for something that has failed. A jeweller cleans and polishes the piece to remove the worn layer and any tarnish underneath, then runs it back through the same electroplating process to lay down a fresh coat of rhodium.
The piece underneath — the sterling silver, the setting, the stones — is unaffected by this. A worn eternity band or a Miami cuban link that has lost its shine is a piece that needs a fresh plating pass, not a piece that has failed. This is also why we plate our own stone-set pieces multiple times over during manufacture rather than once: a thicker starting point buys more time before that first re-plating is needed.
Does rhodium plating protect against anything besides looks?
It does two jobs at once: it gives sterling silver its bright, cool-white finish, and it puts a barrier between your skin and the metal underneath.
925 sterling silver is 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper, and copper is what reacts with skin acidity and everyday chemicals to cause tarnish or, on some skin, temporary discolouration. A rhodium layer sits on top of that alloy and keeps it out of direct, constant contact with your skin, which is the same mechanism we cover in more detail in why sterling silver can turn a finger green. Rhodium itself also contains no nickel, so it does not introduce a common contact allergen the way some white-metal alloys can.
Once the plating thins enough for the silver underneath to be exposed at contact points, that protection thins with it. This is a cosmetic and comfort issue rather than a structural one: the piece itself is not damaged, and a re-plate restores both the finish and the barrier.
