Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper by weight, and it is the copper that reacts, not the silver. Pure silver is close to inert against skin and sweat, but it is also too soft to hold a ring's shape or grip a stone securely, so jewellers have alloyed it with copper for strength since long before anyone was worried about green fingers.
Why does sterling silver turn skin green?
Sweat carries sodium chloride, lactic acid and trace amino acids, and all three attack copper. The copper at the surface of the metal first oxidises, then reacts further with those compounds to form copper carbonate, copper chloride and copper sulfate — a family of blue-green salts related to the verdigris that forms on outdoor bronze and copper roofing over years of weather.
Those salts do not stay on the metal. They transfer to skin as a fine green residue wherever the piece sits, which is why the mark tends to appear under a ring band rather than around it, or under a bracelet clasp rather than along the whole chain.
This is a chemical reaction between metal and sweat, not an allergic reaction, and it washes off with soap and water. It leaves no lasting mark on the skin itself.
Does a green mark mean my ring is fake or poor quality?
A green mark does not mean the piece is fake, though it does not prove it either — it only rules out pure fine silver. Sterling silver is defined by its copper content — 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper is what the 925 stamp refers to — so a reaction involving copper is consistent with the metal being genuine sterling. It does not prove authenticity on its own, because plated base-metal jewellery that also contains copper can react the same way. Whether any individual sees a visible mark depends far more on personal skin chemistry than on the ring. Plating is not permanent. Once it thins through, the sterling silver underneath is exposed again and the same reaction becomes possible. A jeweller can renew the plating; that is routine maintenance, not a sign anything went wrong.
Is a green mark an allergic reaction?
No, and the distinction matters if you are trying to work out what you are dealing with. A metal allergy is usually to nickel, involves the immune system, and shows up as itching, redness or a rash that can persist after the jewellery comes off. Nickel is not part of the standard 925 sterling silver specification, which is silver and copper, though it can appear in cheaper base-metal jewellery underneath a silver or gold finish. The green residue described here is a surface stain rather than a rash, and it comes off with washing rather than lingering on the skin.

How do you deal with it, or avoid it?
Keep a piece dry when you reasonably can, since trapped moisture under a ring or a bracelet clasp is what drives the reaction fastest. Wipe pieces down after a workout, take rings off before applying lotion or perfume, and clean stone-set pieces like stud earrings or a floating solitaire necklace with a soft cloth so residue does not sit against skin overnight. None of this is about the jewellery being fragile; it is the same handling that applies to any copper-bearing metal.
If a piece reacts on you consistently and you want to rule the problem out entirely rather than manage it, stainless steel and titanium do not contain copper in their standard alloys and will not produce this reaction at all. Should this change which ring you choose?
Not on its own. Both platings block the reaction while they are intact, and most people wearing either ring day to day will not notice anything at all — this is a minority effect that depends on individual skin chemistry, not a certainty that comes with the material.
